The Axum stelae- giant granite obelisks hand hewn in the 4th century B.C.
One of the largest such stelae stands 90 feet high in the city of Axum in northern Ethiopia.
More than a dozen elephants carried the massive rough stones from the mountains of the north. The best architects in the empire were summoned. It remains a mystery how artisans of the day were able to intricately and precisely carve these enormously hard stones.
The exquisite craftsmanship of the Nubia reminds us of the timeless skills that tie together today’s artisans to legendary craftspeople across the millennia.
